Solid California redwood heartwood, salvaged from construction materials, milled by hand in small batches to thin sheets, and laser cut. Grain patterns, color, and tone will vary, and no two are quite exactly alike.
Based on my original watercolor art, quick little sketches of trees inspired by my photographs that I make as a way to relax. By digitally tracing my art and adapting it for laser cutting, I can turn my 2D art into a tangible piece that can be shared and displayed.
These solid wood laser cut trees are a meeting of timeless natural materials, a careful human touch of craftsmanship, wood knowledge, and the precision capabilities of modern technology.
Laser cutting highly detailed and interlocking parts requires precise tolerances and specifications in material. Every piece of wood that goes into my small laser cutter/engraver is individually resawn, jointed, and planed to thickness manually in my small shop. Carefully considering the wood's grain orientation, structure, density, and flatness is crucial to getting a quality result, and has taken a great deal of trial and error. A variation of even one hundredth of an inch can result in a splintered or incomplete cut, charring, or parts that do not fit together.
Approximately 6 in. tall, and 3x3 in. footprint.
A charming plastic-free holiday decoration, beautiful enough to keep out all year.
Unfinished redwood also doubles as an essential oil diffuser, apply a few drops to the center of the tree and your room will smell like a forest, or your favorite scent. Fir and cedar essential oils are the closest scent to redwood.
Please note, these trees are somewhat fragile as they are made from solid wood, not plywood. This means that the grain has a stronger orientation perpendicular to the grain, and a weaker orientation parallel to it. Simply put, if you held the top of the tree in one hand and the base of the tree in the other, it would be very difficult to break in half. But if you held the pointy "branches" of the tree and tried to snap them off, it would be much easier. These are not a suitable product for small children, or for areas subject to damage.
